Amanda Justice, a first grade teacher at Jesse S. Bobo in Spartanburg School District Six, is the winner of the $1000 Teacher Grant for 2009-2010.  Her request focused on funding a parental involvement project entitled “Picture Me Learning through Creativity."

Addressing both ELA and Social Studies standards, Amanda plans to use the funds for a digital camera and printing supplies. The students will be participating in creative projects with their parents and families and will be documenting these learning experiences through pictures and reflective writing.

2009-2010 Student Scholarship Award Winner PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, May 29 2010 07:03
The winner for 2009-2010 is Kayla A. Knight, a Junior at
Newberry College, who is working on a BS degree in
Elementary Education. She currently has earned 107 credits.
As can be seen from an excerpt from her essay on her choice
of teaching as a profession, Kayla already exhibits the
enthusiasm for teaching and the commitment to helping
children espoused by SC ASCD.
Excerpt:
The obvious answers for why I want to teach come to
mind, my love for children, my desire to constantly
remain in a state of learning and, finally, my enjoyment
of helping others. However, the primary reason why I
wish to teach is best summed up in the following quote
by Harold Geneen: “The best way to inspire people to
superior performance is to convince them by everything
you do and your everyday attitude that you are
wholeheartedly supporting them.” I want to teach
because I have learned the value of trying my best, and
I want to wake each day knowing that what I am doing
and the compassion I have for my students will inspire
them. I will use the scholarship to help me acquire my
teacher certification in both Early Childhood and
Elementary Education in order to inspire children and
give back what I myself have been given.
Along with the presentation of the $1000. Scholarship Award,
SC ASCD extends congratulations to Kayla. Most certainly, we
will be fortunate to have her join us in our profession.
